Not everyone comes to America’s Paradise for vacation. As recovery efforts, infrastructure improvements, and construction projects continue across the island, companies are bringing skilled tradespeople, contractors, consultants, and project managers to St. Croix in increasing numbers.

Are you a contractor headed to St. Croix?

Whether you’re coordinating a recovery effort, infrastructure project, utility upgrade, construction job, or professional services contract, reliable transportation is essential to keeping your project on schedule. This guide provides an overview of transportation options on St. Croix and explains how companies can secure vehicles for employees, contractors, and subcontractors working on the island.

Transportation Options on St. Croix

Unlike many mainland destinations, public transportation options on St. Croix are limited. Most residents and visitors rely on personal vehicles for daily transportation.

Taxis and independent rideshare services are available on the island and can be a good option for airport transfers and occasional trips. However, these services can become expensive and impractical for workers who need to travel between job sites, offices, accommodations, and suppliers throughout the day.  Note: Uber and Lyft are not currently available on St. Croix.

For most contractors and project teams, a rental vehicle is the most efficient and cost-effective transportation solution.

Monthly Rentals and Long-Term Leasing

Centerline Car Rentals offers both monthly rentals and long-term corporate leasing options to support projects of varying durations.

Monthly Rentals

Monthly rentals are ideal for shorter assignments, temporary projects, and rotating personnel. Companies can reserve vehicles for employees and extend rentals as project timelines evolve.

Corporate Leasing

For projects lasting three months or longer, corporate leasing may be a more practical solution. Corporate leases typically range from three months to three years and provide businesses with predictable transportation costs while eliminating many of the responsibilities associated with vehicle ownership.

Business Account vs. Corporate Lease

Business Accounts

A business account allows a company to establish an approved payment method and designate authorized drivers or employees. This option simplifies reservations and billing while providing flexibility for short-term and recurring rentals.

Submit a business account inquiry and our team will send an application.

Corporate Leases

A corporate lease is designed for long-term vehicle use and can be arranged for a business, project team, or independent contractor. Lessees receive dedicated vehicles for the duration of the lease term while Centerline manages routine maintenance and service requirements. This option is often preferred by project managers overseeing extended assignments, recovery operations, and infrastructure projects.

Corporate lease customers must provide proof of insurance that extends coverage to vehicles rented or leased for business use. Companies should confirm coverage with their insurance provider before beginning the lease process.

Simply submit a corporate leasing inquiry and our team will be in touch.

Corporate Leasing Maintenance and Service Support

One of the primary advantages of a corporate lease is that routine maintenance is included. Centerline manages scheduled services such as:

  • Oil changes
  • Tire rotations and maintenance
  • Preventive maintenance inspections
  • Manufacturer-recommended service intervals

To minimize disruptions, Centerline may provide an alternate vehicle while maintenance is being performed, helping crews remain productive and projects stay on schedule.

Fleet Options for Project Managers and Crews

Every project has different transportation requirements. Centerline offers a variety of vehicle types, including:

  • Economy, compact and mid-size sedans – ideal for travel between offices and accommodations
  • Jeeps – a versatile option for navigating varying road conditions and remote work locations
  • SUVs – additional passenger capacity and cargo space for supervisors, inspectors, and project teams
  • Pickup trucks – well suited for job site operations, transporting equipment, tools, and supplies
  • Passenger vans – transport crews efficiently between accommodations, offices, and project sites
  • Cargo vans – secure transportation for equipment, materials, and supplies

Whether you need a fuel-efficient vehicle for project management staff, trucks for field operations, or multiple vehicles for a crew, our team can help identify the right solution for your project.

Car Rental Tips for Contractors

  • Secure rental vehicles early. During major recovery efforts and large-scale infrastructure projects, demand for rental vehicles increases significantly. Recovery workers, contractors, consultants, inspectors, utility personnel, and support staff all compete for available vehicles while normal tourism demand continues. Companies that wait until personnel arrive may find limited inventory, particularly for trucks, vans, and specialty vehicles.
  • Rent from Centerline’s Christiansted or Mid-Island offices. Centerline offers convenient rental locations in Christiansted, Mid-Island, and at the Henry E. Rohlsen Airport (STX). While our airport counter provides a seamless arrival experience, airport rentals are subject to a 10% airport concession fee required by the airport authority. Companies looking to maximize their transportation budget can avoid this fee by renting from our Christiansted or Mid-Island locations.
  • Check out our Fleet Sale. For long-term projects, buying a vehicle may be worth exploring. Centerline updates our Fleet Sale weekly with professionally-maintained former rental vehicles.
  • Be prepared to Keep Left. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, vehicles drive on the left side of the road. Most visitors adjust quickly, but it helps to be prepared before arriving. We recommend watching our Keep Left video series to familiarize yourself with local driving conditions and make the transition as smooth as possible.
