If you know all the words to the Hamilton soundtrack, your perfect day on St. Croix should start with a walking tour of the town where a young Alexander Hamilton lived before going to the States to become one of our Founding Fathers. Various tour options will take you to places where Hamilton lived and where he, “Started workin’, clerkin’ for his late mother’s landlord. Tradin’ sugar cane and rum and all the things he can’t afford.”
A new walking tour, Eyes of Hamilton, is led by Alexander Hamilton reincarnated (a.k.a. a local Hamilton expert dressed as A. Ham. himself). You’ll visit the important places in Christiansted and hear about the events and influences of his childhood on St. Croix.
CHANT (Crucian Heritage & Nature Tourism) offers an opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Hamilton in their Alexander Hamilton’s Walking Tour. You’ll see the places where he lived and worked, and go inside the Fort where his mother was imprisoned.
The National Park Service has also put together a map and publication for a self-guided walking tour of Alexander Hamilton’s Christiansted.
During your Hamilton tour, you’ll probably work up an appetite — and you’ll see several dining options along the way. For an authentic local lunch experience, pop in to Zeny’s for some stew chicken, beans and rice, and plantains.
By now you’ll be ready to relax. We recommend hopping on the ferry to Hotel on the Cay for an afternoon on the beach. You’ll get a different perspective of Christiansted and the harbor from here, and a dip in the water will revive your tired legs.
