This is a start to a broader campaign to Drive Safe With Centerline. We are working with the U.S. Virgin Islands Office of Highway Safety (VIOHS) to learn the areas of greatest need and create messaging to help drivers understand USVI laws and safety precautions. VIOHS has a Crash Statistic booklet documenting motor vehicle crashes in the USVI from 2010-2019.
On average the USVI experienced 14 crashes per day from 2010 to 2019 with approximately 2 of these crashes resulting in an injury or death to approximately 3 people.
Naturally, a main theme of Drive Safe With Centerline is KEEP LEFT! Failure to keep the proper lane or driving on the wrong side of the road accounts for more than 12% of crash contributing circumstances, according to the booklet. We know that this is an adjustment for our customers visiting from the States and try to provide as many cues/reminders as possible to make keeping left easier.
Other areas of focus of Drive Safe With Centerline include:
- Driving the speed limit
- Driving sober
- Distracted driving
- Yield the Right of Way
- What to do if there is an accident
- Buckle Up!
