Unless you like piña coladas and getting caught in the rain, this is a reminder to check your windshield wiper blades periodically. Our maintenance manager recommends checking your wiper blades at least every six months and changing them as needed. Keeping wiper blades in good condition will help with visibility, especially during those pop-up island squalls.

In sunny St. Croix, the heat is hard on wiper blades. Direct sun can cause the rubber to deteriorate. In some cases, the rubber will stick to the windshield or rip as it gets brittle. If you’re in a colder climate, you’re just coming out of winter and your wiper blades have been tasked with pushing away snow and ice. These conditions can also cause wiper blades to freeze up or break.

Pro Tip: Don’t forget to check your rear window wiper blade!

Signs Your Wiper Blades Should Be Replaced

Watch for these signs that your wiper blades should be replaced:

  • Smudges or streaks on your windshield
  • Reduced contact on your windshield
  • Stuttering across your windshield
  • Squeaking from the rubber
  • Cracked rubber
  • Rubber adhesive is failing and wiper blade is flopping around
